SOUTHERN PINES

Our Trackman4 fitting system collects data about spin, ball speed, path and trajectory. For maximum distance with modern balls, drives by a typical male should climb quickly at between 13 degrees and 17 degrees, spin at less than 3,000 revolutions per minute, flatten out at 125 yards to 150 yards from the tee and descend at between 28 and 38 degrees. The ideal numbers vary depending on a player's ball speed and other factors, but the Trackman4 system dials in the best clubhead and shaft combination for any swing. (you can't rely on "stiff" and "regular" shaft designations from manufacturers because there is no industry standard.)

During the fitting, the golfer will hit various combinations of clubs. The data taken from each swing/stroke is then calculated and processed to come up with the best fit clubs for the golfer's swing. Once all swings have been captured the golfer is then given the opportunity to validate the recommended clubs from your Club Fit Session. In addition, we will recommend the "best" golf ball for your swing.

My Club Fitting History - Doug Millar Director of Golf
My interest in club fitting began back in 1975 as I started my Professional career under the direction of Ken Steeves, Head Professional at
Hamilton Golf Club. Ken was always seeking the latest technology and best equipment on the market so that he could simply teach the best \sell the best for his customers.
The mid 70’s saw golfers still using wood woods but perimeter weighted irons were just starting to become the norm for the average golfer. In 1979 much changed – the first TaylorMade metal wood was introduced to the market. We saw for the first time different lofts on drivers which resulted in golfers having the option of different trajectories and curvature. The ability to change the loft on a driver from 7 degrees to 11 degrees was an absolute game changer.
The metal wood started new technologies resulting in golfers understanding perimeter weighting and how much more stable the golf club had become. Clubs were now made more consistently by investment casting and the ability to move weight easily within the club head.
The technology advancements made the golf ball go higher which especially helped the senior and Lady Golfers hit straighter and longer shots. Golfers started to understand that “loft” was their friend and sought out the trouble clubs such as 7woods and 9woods. As a teacher helping a golfer play better I needed to look at all the pieces to the puzzle – such as nutrition, equipment, and physique of the player. It only made sense that clubs needed to be fit – the same way as buying a suit. The effects especially for juniors playing with cut down, hand me down clubs from Dad resulted in the shaft being too stiff which in turn led to bad habits such as trying to help the ball into the air. I noticed that lie angles for juniors seemed to be too upright causing the ball to hook and go to the left. I started fitting juniors to lighter and “whippier” clubs with flatter lie angles through the use of a loft and lie machine and cutting down mom’s old clubs instead of dad’s.
Graphite shafts became more popular as the price of graphite become more affordable. Woman and seniors enjoyed the lighter shafts
and enjoyed a better motion as a result. Graphite also allowed us to build a longer shaft for the tall golfers without the golf club becoming extremely heavy. Understanding how to make these adjustments to length and lie could affect the path that the club traveled on and also the change to the impact of ball and club.
In the 90’s club manufacturers understood the importance of “fitting” and started to offer more options and customization of their
equipment especially in shaft choices. The next step was the advent of the “fitting cart” to provide fitters with the necessary tools and
equipment to produce the perfect choice for each and every golfer. Club fitting is a combination of science, artistry and getting the right feel and look for each golfer.
I have always sought to be one of the best club fitters and teachers that I could be. I wanted to make the great feel of a well-struck golf
shot happen more frequently.
After all, we have one thing in common as golfers we are all trying to hit the center of the club. Why not come to SP Golf Course and find out more?
